1. Mattress Pad

The mattresses on the dorm beds are awful and I’m not exaggerating. His back will be hurting after one day without one.

This is the mattress pad that I and my other college friends are using.

2. Vacuum

Men or at least guys in college are TERRIBLE at cleaning. One guy’s dorm room was so bad that they thought a cleaning lady was supposed to clean it.

I love this vacuum below because it’s super easy to work and cheap.

We also have a post on cleaning products that students need to have in the dorm room here.

3. Shower Caddy

If you or your son have to use the communal bathrooms, he is going to need a shower caddy.

It allows him to carry and store all of his bathroom essentials in one hand.

So many people forget to pack a tool kit but it comes in handy.

My dad bought me one for college and I used it whenever I had a problem (and it can teach them a lot of great skills).

5. Simple Black Or Navy Bed Set

Having a clean bed and an inviting bed color can help make the space look more inviting.

This black set comes in many colors and the reviews are amazing!

6. Dorm Bedskirt

The smartest thing for him to do is hide his storage containers under the bed and then put this bed skirt on.

It will make the room look more organized while keeping it minimalist.

7. Hanging Shoe Rack

This hanging shoe rack would go on the inside of your closet door.

Your dorm room will have limited space. I recommend getting one if you plan on bringing a lot of shoes with you.

8. Mini Fridge

This mini fridge is perfect if you plan on keeping drinks in your room or even meal prep.

I have seen many guys in college keep them right by their desks with snacks sitting on top of it.

9. Roku Tv

I only recommend this if you are going to bring a Tv to college.

In my freshman year in college, I bought a Tv and ended up using it about 4 times. However, this Roku remote is really easy to use and even easier to plug in.

10. Calendar/Schedule

You are going to need to keep track of your classes (and cleaning schedule). Setting this on your desk gives you a perfect heads-up for upcoming test and/or events. It also keeps you from over-scheduling yourself and forgetting about a final.

11. Seating Room

So far, the only seating place in your dorm is your bed and the chair that comes with the desk. Unless you are planning to keep your door closed all the time, I recommend buying a chair. The one above is perfect for underneath your bed (depending on the height of the bed).

Pro Tip – if you want to save money, go to your local thrift store to find one.

12. Bed-Side Tray

This tray is a necessity if you get thirsty in the middle of the night or want to fall asleep with your phone. It fits on the side of your bed and holds your wants on it.

13. Mini Fridge Caddy

It goes directly on top of your fridge and you can put the contaminants next to it. I have even seen people put a microwave on top of this fridge caddy. Keeps everything organized!

16. Microwave

As my dad said, Ramen meals are in your near future.

This microwave can be plugged directly into the wall and easily cook your meals in your dorm room.

17. pasta cooker

I sadly did not hear about this my freshman year but my friends keep telling me about it.

You use this container with your pasta inside and then put it in the microwave. Tada your pasta is fully cooked!

18. Ziplock Bags

I included Ziplock bags in this post because I fully believe they are essential.

I used them all the time in my first year of college. If I had snacks left over, a ziplock bag. If I had a part of a meal left and didn’t clean the Tupperware, I would grab a Ziplock bag.

To save you time I have included a link straight to ziplock bags you can click here.

19. Cooker

Can I first say that I HAD NO IDEA THIS EXISTED MY FRESHMAN YEAR!

This is an electronic pasta/pan cooker that you can use in your dorm room. I would have cooked so many more meals if I had this. If you are buying for a student, this is a must-buy.
